READING ESCORT TRAILER'S MODEL AND SERIAL NUMBERS

To better assist our dealers in repairing and servicing our Escort trailers, we have developed simple tables necessary for you to better understand what all the letters and numbers in our model and serial numbers are for. At the end of this section is a diagram showing the location of the VIN number tags on our Escort trailers built after November 1993 and the location of the satellite tags.

THE TRAILER MODEL NUMBER

The model number of an Escort trailer contains important information about the trailer. It describes the basic type of construction, the length of the trailer, the type of trailer finish, and whether or not the trailer includes standard brakes. For example, let's use trailer model number:

WT 18 P A B

(1) (2) (3) (4) (5)

Group #1: The first two positions of the model number, WT, represent the basic construction of the trailer. Referencing Table # 1, we find our trailer is a welded tube "wishbone" trailer.

Group #2: The third and fourth characters, 18, represent the basic length of the trailer in feet. This trailer is 18' long.

Group #3: "P" is the fifth character in our model number. It describes the trailer finish. There are two types of finishes: painted and galvanized. "P" represents painted and "G" represents galvanized. Our example is a painted trailer.

Group #4: The sixth character, A, designates the trailer series. Escort manufactures several similar trailers that may have slight differences like step style, color, wheels etc. To distinguish these differences, the letters "A" through "Z" are assigned to each model.

Group #5: If a "B" is noted in the seventh position of our model number, then our trailer is equipped with standard brakes.

Tandem axle trailers may contain an extra character in the model number. An example of this would be a model number WT21TGBB. This is a welded tube "wishbone" style trailer (WT), 21' long, tandem axle (T), galvanized (G), series "B" with brakes.

Note: We still have a few prior year model numbers that follow a slightly different pattern. For instance, BT20TG1B, is a bolted tube trailer, 20' long, tandem axle ("T" vs. "S" for single axle), galvanized, series number 1 with brakes.

THE TRAILER SERIAL NUMBER (OR VIN)

Each trailer manufactured by Escort Trailer Corporation has a unique trailer serial number. The trailer serial number (or vehicle identification number; "VIN") will always start with "405". The U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has designated this number as Escort's manufacturing identification number.

Let's use an example of a trailer serial number and break it down into different groups to illustrate what each number or letter means. Our example will be a 20' single axle trailer, VIN #:

405120DA1PB000123.

405 1 20 D A 1 P B 000123

(1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) (9)

Group #1: 405 Escort Trailer's manufacturing identification number.

Group #2: 1 Axle configuration (number of axles on the trailer). This is a single axle trailer. A tandem axle trailer would contain a "2" in this position.

Group #3: 20 Basic length of trailer in feet. This is a 20' trailer.

Group #4: D Body style or type of trailer construction. Our example is a welded tube "wishbone" trailer. Reference Table # 2 for a list of all body styles.

Group #5: A Trailer series (this is a further distinction of basic trailer body style such as color, type of step plates used, wheels, etc.) Our trailer is first in a series of 20' single axle welded tube "wishbone" trailers.

Group #6: 1 The "check digit." This field is calculated by a formula established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The only valid digits are the numbers 0 through 9 and the letter "X".

Group #7: P The tenth VIN position is reserved for the model year of the trailer. Again, the U.S. Department of Transportation controls this field. Reference Table # 3 for a table of all the model year codes.

Group #8: B The final trailer assembly location is designated by a one-letter plant code. Spokane, WA, was the final assembly plant for our trailer example. Reference Table # 4 for a complete list of plant codes.

Group #9: 000123 Starting with 000001, this group shows the sequential number of trailers assembled for the trailer series, type, year, and plant of final assembly. This particular trailer is the one hundredth and twenty-third trailer built.

After referencing our tables, we can conclude that this is an Escort single axle, 20' welded tube "wishbone" style trailer, first in the series, built for model year 1993 in Spokane, WA, and it was the one hundredth and twenty-third trailer assembled.

One final note about trailer serial numbers: The U.S. Department of Transportation forbids the use of the letters "I", "O", and "Q" in any position of the vehicle's identification number.
